Goal: Read One Book a Month | My 2017 Reading List

I have to be completely honest – I’m not much of a reader. As much as I wish I was someone who could read an entire book in a day, I’m just not and I have to embrace that. But, I am ALL for self-improvement, and each one of these books improves my life in some way. My recurring theme for the year, is “be purposeful” to create a life that I am joyful in. Each of these books will teach me something about being more intentional with my life and business. I am so excited to share them with you – feel free to follow along and read with me as well! I’d love to have someone keeping me accountable along the way. At the end of each month, I will be writing a blog post with my thoughts on the book, so keep an eye out for that!

The 52 Lists Project

The 52 Lists Project is a weekly, guided journal to give the reader something to look back on and reflect. I sit down every Sunday afternoon and journal about that week’s prompt. So far, I’ve written about my dreams and goals for this year, my favorite characters from books and movies, and happy moments in my life. This year, I would like to be more intentional about being grateful, and a guided journal like The 52 Lists Project is a great way to do that!

My 2017 Reading List | Destinee Stark Photography

January: Having a Martha Home the Mary Way

This book is written in a daily devotional format, and I absolutely love how it breaks an overwhelming project down into small, actionable steps. The tagline for the book is, “31 Days to a Clean House and a Satisfied soul”. I love how the focus of the book isn’t JUST about having a clean home, but having a home where you can truly love others better. If you are feeling stressed out by a chaotic home, I highly recommend this book!

February: Love Your Life Not Theirs

I have been a huge fan of Dave Ramsey and his team for years, and his daughter – Rachel Cruze, just wrote a new book about something that is a huge problem in a lot of people’s lives – Comparison. In this book, she talks about seven money habits for living the life YOU want, and letting go of comparison and how it affects your financial decisions. One of Dave Ramsey’s well known quotes is, “People buy things they don’t need, with money they don’t have, to impress people they don’t like.” , and I know this to be so true! One of my goals with being more intentional, includes living a more content lifestyle. “Stuff” can’t fill me up, like a truly joyful and content life will.

March: Uninvited

To go along with the theme of “comparison”, Lysa TerKeurst’s new book, Uninvited, is about just that! I’ve struggled with feeling like “enough” most of my life, and this book is all about combating those feelings of rejection, with truths of love and acceptance. I started this book last year, and absolutely loved it, but in true “Destinee Fashion”, I put it down when I got busy. I’m so excited to dive back into this book this year!

My 2017 Reading List | Destinee Stark PhotographyApril: Profit First

This book came highly recommended to me by fellow creatives in The Rising Tide Society. Profit First is, “A simple system to transform any business from a cash-eating monster to a money-making machine”. Sign me up! I have to be honest, though. I’m a creative, and reading a book about business finance for an entire month is super intimidating to me. I would much rather read something else, but I know the information in this book has been life changing for others, so I am excited to learn from it!

May: Grace Not Perfection

I have been so excited to read this book ever since I heard Emily Ley share about it on social media! It seems like everything that I need in my life – “Embracing simplicity, celebrating joy”. Confession time again: I’m a perfectionist and am super hard on myself sometimes. “I will hold myself to a standard of grace, not perfection”.

June: Big Magic – Creative Living Beyond Fear

This is another book that came highly recommended by my fellow creatives. Elizabeth Gilbert is the author of Eat Pray Love, and this book is all about the nature of inspiration, as a creative. She encourages her readers to dig deeper and find the treasures within themselves to live a creative life. I am so excited to read this book!

My 2017 Reading List | Destinee Stark Photography

July: Taming the To Do List

This is another book that I started last year, got busy, and put down for months. I’m so excited to dive back into this book because it addresses the guilt associated with an unfinished To-Do List. She talks about the shift in society has shifted to carrying the burden of having to respond to every email, text, tweet, and message, the moment we receive it. This behavior starts a cycle of procrastination of the important stuff. I am so guilty of that, but being intentional about ordering priorities will be a game changer. If you struggle with the guilty associated with unfinished To-Do Lists, I highly recommend this book!

August: Present Over Perfect

Have you caught onto the theme yet? I clearly am on path to living a more intentional life! I think every single one of these books has that recurring theme, and I’m not even mad about it! Present Over Perfect is about, “leaving behind frantic for a simpler, more soulful way of living”. Ummmm….yes, please!

September: The Best Yes

This book has been on my list for years! I even rented it at the library once, renewed it three times, and never got the chance to read it! I know – that’s completely crazy! This book is about, “making wise decisions in the midst of endless demands”. Lysa addresses the difference between saying yes to all the things, and saying yes to God. Over the last few years, I have began saying “No” to  mundane opportunities that weren’t serving my purpose, so that I could make room for the best opportunities. But, I still struggle with the guilt associated with saying “No” sometimes, and I am hoping this book will help me to feel more confident when I have to turn opportunities down.

My 2017 Reading List | Destinee Stark Photography

October: Living Well Spending Less

There’s a theme here: I have a lot of books on my list and don’t take the time to actually read them. This book has been on my list for years, and I can’t wait to actually read it! This book is about how to live “The Good Life” without feeling like more stuff is never enough and to simplify our family budget to focus on contentment. She even has a challenge that goes along with this, called “Living Well, Spending Zero” that we may consider doing sometime this year!

November: Wife After God and Make It Happen

This month, I’m doubling up on a short daily devotional and yet, another book that I started last year, but didn’t finish. Oy! I’m really bad at that – I know! Wife After God is a 30-day devotional about drawing closer to God and my husband. I’ve done this devotional several times before, but I think it’s a great thing to refresh it every so often. Make It Happen is for any woman that has ever felt anxious or overwhelmed by chasing “perfect”. The author, Lara Casey, is also the creator of The Powersheets – the intentional goal setting planner that I received for Christmas this year from my Dad!

December: The Legacy Journey

Anyone that knows me, knows that I LOVE Dave Ramsey’s teachings. I am so excited to dive into his book, The Legacy Journey, to learn more about what the bible says about managing money. I also figured this would be a great read to start just before the new year!

A Reflection of The Creative at Heart Conference from a First Time Attendee

A Reflection of The Creative at Heart Conference from a First Time Attendee

I am constantly amazed at how great my God is. The Creative at Heart Conference has been on my wishlist for quite a while. Although, it is a worthwhile conference, unfortunately, I would not have been able to make the investment any time soon. Until an incredible and unexpected opportunity presented itself.

In August, I attended The Gathering Event by Hope Taylor and Caroline Logan in Fredericksburg, VA. The Gathering Event is a conference created specifically for young, creative entrepreneurs. In addition to the incredible amount of knowledge I received, there were some pretty incredible giveaways at The Gathering, as well! One of the giveaways was for a heavily discounted ticket to The Creative at Heart Conference. The ticket was discounted just enough, that I would most likely be able to make it work for our budget. Another attendee at the conference won that ticket. Unfortunately, she was unable to attend the conference in Memphis.

Hope and Caroline, opened this opportunity up to The Gathering’ s private Facebook group after the conference. A new winner would be chosen at random. I was extremely surprised and excited when I found out that I was chosen! I am confident that God placed this opportunity in my life because I truly needed it. After a rough couple of months, I was feeling uninspired and needed an encouragement overhaul.

Although I was incredibly grateful for this opportunity, my social anxiety began to set in shortly after reserving my ticket. If you’ve followed my blog for a while, then it is no surprise that I have suffer from anxiety and depression – especially in social settings. All the feelings of potential rejection began filling my heart. I am so thankful for a few of my friends encouraging me through those tough thoughts, because Creative at Heart is one of the most worthwhile investments I’ve made, both personally and professionally.

Shortly after being added to our private Facebook group for the conference, another attendee posted that she was hosting a bible study each morning before the conference. I felt like this was the opportunity I needed to make some new friends and go into the conference feeling less anxious. I am so glad that I overcame those anxious thoughts and attended the bible study, because the friends I made there, are the girls I hung out with for the duration of the conference. They have been such a blessing to me, and without this opportunity, I wouldn’t have met them.

Community Over Competition

The Creative at Heart Community reminds me a lot of The Rising Tide Society Community, in that everyone is welcoming, kind-hearted, encouraging, and supportive. There are so many sweet souls that attend this conference, and I felt nothing but welcomed. It was wonderful! Also, just to put into perspective how amazing the educational content is at this conference – I wrote 36 pages of notes! There were only 8 pages left in my entire notebook – that’s how incredible these speakers were. They all had the ability to just reach into my soul with their words and their encouragement really had an impact on my life.

I left Creative at Heart feeling completely on fire for my business and excited to make things happen. I definitely will be making this conference a priority in the future, not just for my business, but for myself personally as well. I learned so much about taking intentional time to rest, outside of the hustle, as well as, serving my clients better. This experience has been incredible and life-changing. I am so thankful to God, Hope Taylor and Caroline Logan for giving me this opportunity. Here are some photos from the conference by the talented Bethanne Arthur and Callie Lindsey.

Saying Yes to RTS | I Have an Exciting Announcement!

A few years ago, my word for the year was, “NO!”. I was taking on too many things, which didn’t allow time for the right things in my life. I began saying, “no”, to some opportunities in order to avoid the feelings of overwhelm that I became all too familiar with. I am so thankful for saying, “yes” to the opportunity of serving with The Rising Tide Society, because it has truly changed my life. Today I want to share a little bit about how saying yes to the right opportunities, can be life changing.

When Saying Yes is Totally Worth It | Rising Tide Society Creative Council

The Beginning

In the Spring of 2015, a local photographer reached out to me. She was struggling with the same things I struggled with – the loneliness of being an entrepreneur. Amanda Ellis and I met up over lunch, and discussed our struggles and our desire to bring local photographers together in support of one another. We had all these ideas, but no clear-cut way to make it happen. I prayed about it, and asked God to show us the right opportunity to make something like this happen in our local community. I’m not exaggerating when I say this, but not even a month later, an extremely talented, well-known wedding photographer that I followed on social media , named Natalie Franke, shared about something really exciting – The Rising Tide Society, a community of creatives gathering locally once a month in the spirit of community over competition.

I felt like I was dreaming or something. THIS was the opportunity I had been praying for! Then, I immediately went onto their website and applied to be a leader for our local chapter of The Rising Tide Society and asked Amanda if she would be my co-leader. I was so thankful to have her by my side because we are both so passionate about supporting one another. After being approved for leadership, we received an informational packet about how to lead a local meet up, and it had the most encouraging words inside…

“We’re writing to you today with a cup of coffee in hand and a giant dream. A desire to make waves for the greater good and to be the change that we so desperately wish to see in this industry. It is our hope to cultivate a society of creative entrepreneurs who believe in community over competition and have a desire to lead with love. From this dream, #TuesdaysTogether was born. A meet up on one Tuesday of every month where we gather together for coffee and conversation. A safe space for idea sharing and goal building. Separated by distance, but beautifully united by a hashtag and a shared desire for community. Because isn’t that what we all deserve? A safe place to belong. If you’re reading this letter, you are already leading your tribe with the same beautiful heart. You are a trailblazer of tranquility and a beacon of light in an industry plagued by bitterness, comparison, and fear. So whether it’s grabbing lunch with a friend in your industry, brainstorming over coffee with other small business owner, or stepping up to organize small groups in your town — join the moment, and let’s make waves together.” – Natalie Franke & Krista Jones

The Life Changing Part

Amanda and I invited all the local creatives we knew and met over coffee in a Panera for the first few months until we got the hang of things. Those conversations within our group, were simply amazing. I had never felt like I belonged, until I found The Rising Tide Society. None of my friends or family understood what it was like to work from home, and chase a dream to make a living, doing what I love. I felt ostracized, judged, unloved, and like I wasn’t enough. When I dove into serving my community of creatives through RTS, my life completely changed. Saying yes to this opportunity was life giving. I have met some of the most amazing, talented, intelligent, and loving creatives in the industry through this opportunity, as well as learned a ton of things and changed my life and business, for the better.

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to attend The Tuesdays Together Leaders Retreat in Charleston, SC. I learned a ton about leadership, how to love and serve my community, and even had a heart to heart with Natalie. If I’m being completely honest, I was terrified to attend this retreat. I didn’t know anyone, and I suffer from social anxiety and feelings of rejection. The first day of the retreat, I sat in the corner by myself because I was too nervous to introduce myself to anyone – even Natalie! Even though I had every reason to connect with others, for some reason, in the back of my mind, I didn’t feel I was good enough for this leadership role. I looked around at the room full of incredibly successful business owners and entrepreneurs, and doubted myself. Little did I know – I was absolutely meant to be there.

The second day, Natalie Franke, walked right up to me and told me some of the most encouraging words that anyone had ever said to me. I was feeling super discouraged for letting my social anxiety hold me back from this incredible opportunity, and her words gave me life. That encouragement lit my fire for this community up again. People like Natalie – are the change I want to see in the world. I am so thankful to be able to work alongside her, and the rest of the team at RTS to make that happen.

Having the opportunity to help other creatives to feel like they belong has always been a passion of mine. Through my leadership with RTS, I’ve seen so many amazing people better their businesses through the information discussed at our monthly meet ups. The continued support of one another has been invaluable on both a personal and professional level for me. Being an entrepreneur is no longer a lonely place for me because I know that I have these incredible creatives that love and support me in the spirit of community over competition. Over the last couple of years, I’ve said no to a lot of opportunities, and I am thankful for that, because saying yes to this one, has been the best yes I ever could’ve declared!

The Creative Council

After nearly two years volunteering as a leader for my local chapter of The Rising Tide Society, I’m so honored and humbled to announce that I have the opportunity to serve alongside 13 amazing visionary leaders on a more-than-local scale, as a part of The Rising Tide Society’s Creative Council for 2017. I will still be leading our local chapter of RTS, but The Creative Council was designed to make waves in the creative industry and serve the community as a whole. We will meet throughout the year and serve as a creative think tank to foster a community over competition mindset, spearhead conversations to change the landscape of the industry, and build intentional relationships to create an environment that is focused on empowerment, encouragement and education. I am so thankful for saying yes to this opportunity, and saying no to others that have allowed me to be able to serve in this way.

Best of Senior Portraits: A Reflection of the Last Year

Best of Senior Portraits 2016 // Destinee Stark Photography // Akron, Ohio

Best of Senior Portraits is a reflection for myself, to see how far I’ve come going into the new year. In a world full of comparison, it’s so important to reflect on your own progress, and not others. 2016 has been full of so many exciting things for me! It marked the first full year of my business that I specialized solely in senior portraits, and the first time I started saying, “no” to any type of work that didn’t make my soul feel fulfilled. I attended THREE conferences, and learned an invaluable amount of information. I mentored with Hope Taylor! I started my very first model program, The Role Model Team, where the girls focus on being good role models, and giving back to the community. And….the best part of all – I was able to serve, and get to know some of the most amazing girls through my business.

I know that I made the right choice a year and a half ago when I decided to completely tear my business down to the ground and start from scratch in the world of senior photography. For me, my job isn’t just to be a photographer for a short period in these girls lives, but to have a positive impact on them and empower them to love themselves for who they are on the inside. My fabulous hairstylist/makeup artist, Marina from Beauty by Mermaid made my girls feel so special and beautiful on their big day! It’s been so wonderful working with her! I can’t wait to see what 2017 has in store for me. If you are a 2017 or 2018 senior wanting a session with me this spring or summer, email me soon to snag one of my last dates! For now, enjoy the best of senior portraits from 2016….

A Short, but Memorable Trip through Nashville in Less than 24 hours

Nashville is one of my favorite cities that I’ve ever had the opportunity to visit. The people are so friendly, the food is amazing, and the music is even better! Originally, we intended on leaving for the Creative at Heart Conference in Memphis, the following day, but we decided to head down a day early for a mini trip through Nashville. We would be in Nashville for less than 24 hours, so we had to cram in as much as we could!

We started our trip off with the breakfast of champions in our hometown – Fred’s Diner. As a side note, if you ever visit Akron, you must have breakfast at this tiny, hole in the wall diner! Their breakfast is the best! After that, we started our 8 hour road trip complete with “24K Magic” on repeat and snacks in hand. Our road trip was full of dance parties and laughter. I wouldn’t have it any other way, because I have the best travel buddy ever – my husband, Aaron!

We had a new experience this trip also – which is super exciting! Our first experience with Airbnb, was our trip to the OBX this summer. We loved it so much that we decided to stay in one again! The only difference is that this time we actually stayed in someone’s house, WHILE they were home. If you’ve never travelled to Nashville, staying downtown is quite expensive for obvious reasons. We found the most beautiful private room in an amazing couple’s home, Franklin, TN – right up the road from Dave Ramsey’s house too! Franklin is a beautiful community about 20-30 minutes from downtown. It worked out perfect for our needs, and our hosts were the sweetest people ever! We will definitely be staying with them again!

After settling in at our Airbnb, we got ready for dinner and headed downtown. We decided on The Stillery, in downtown Nashville. The Stillery is famous for their southern mac and cheese, topped with hot chicken, so that’s what I ordered! It was delicious! After dinner, we walked around downtown and visited a few of the famous honkey tonks, like Tootsie’s World Famous Orchid Lounge. I love the energy that the music of Nashville brings. There is so much talent in this city, it’s incredible! After walking around and listening to music for a few hours, we headed back to our Airbnb to rest up for the next day!

The Next Day

The next day, we packed up our things and checked out of our Airbnb to finish up our trip through Nashville. Clearly, we are “breakfast people”, so we went to our favorite breakfast spot in all of Nashville – The Pancake Pantry. It was a Saturday, so it was packed! The line was wrapped around the building, and it was very chilly outside. It was so worth it though, and there was some amazing musicians playing on the bench outside the restaurant to keep us entertained.

After breakfast, we travelled to the cutest little part of town in Nashville, referred to as “12 South”. There, we found the cutest gift shop, Cadeau Nashville. “Cadeau” means “gift” in French. Gifts and Nashville, is totally my kind of place! They had inspirational quotes all over the store, and the most quirky little things, like cheeseburger Christmas ornaments! It took so much self control not to buy everything in the store. After that, we headed over to the famous, Five Daughters Bakery. If this isn’t the cutest bakery to ever exist, I don’t know what is! They had a wall with an umbrella and raining donuts, painted on it! So cute!

As if we needed more sweets, we found Sprinkles, which is a cupcake shop that has the famous Cupcake ATM. Yum! Then, I finally got to visit THE store for women inspired by the south – Draper James! Reese Witherspoon, whom I’m obsessed with, started Draper James to honor the southern charm she was raised with by her grandparents Dorothea Draper and William James Witherspoon. I am crazy over great branding, and this store has AMAZING branding! I loved everything about the store, down to every southern detail!

We also found an all natural, holistic pet supplies store, called Wags and Whiskers. I totally wish we had one of these in Ohio, because the selection of products they had was amazing! Anyone who knows me, knows I’m a sucker for antique stores and vintage shops. We stumbled across the cutest shop, called Savant. They had such a great selection of local antique finds. One of my best friend’s birthdays is in November, and I wanted to get her a gift that was locally made in Nashville.

We stopped at the cutest little boutique, called Serendipity. I got her the most delicious vanilla and myrrh soy candle, that was hand poured in Franklin and the most amazing bracelet by Branded Collective. Branded Collective employs survivors of human trafficking from Nashville-based non-profit End Slavery Tennessee. Branded Collective is an economic empowerment jobs program where the women collaborate with local artisans to design and handcraft the jewelry collection.

As their website says, “Many victims of human trafficking are BRANDED; their captors physically mark them with a number or symbol. The process is often violent: a forced tattoo, a burn or knife cut. When you receive your item from the BRANDED Collective, you are BRANDED. Each piece contains a unique number that represents one of the millions trapped in the nightmare of trafficking.” The bracelet that I purchased for my friend, has the initials of the human trafficking victim that created the bracelet. I absolutely love the cause behind Branded Collective, and knew that my friend would too!

We finished our trip up with a the most delicious smoothies from Franklin Juice Company, next door. Franklin Juice Company offers organic cold pressed juice, acai, and smoothies. They were delicious! With our smoothies in hand, we were ready for the 3 hour drive to Memphis for the Creative at Heart Conference, which will be on the blog in the next few weeks! Here are some of my favorites from our trip…
